Most likely when you first think about bacteria, you think of diseases and things that have been contaminated. However, bacteria does not always cause trouble to a human. In fact, there are some bacteria that are good for humans!

What is another word for "good bacteria"?

Your body is full of different types of bacteria, good and bad. "Good Bacteria" is also known as probiotics. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeast found throughout the body that benefit your health. Probiotics found in the digestive tract help your stomach to stay strong and healthy as well. Some good sources of probiotics are yougurt and chocolate.

The history behind probiotics..

The history of probiotics go back all the way to the mid-1990s. People constantly wanted to know more about probiotics, their health benefits, and how they keep your body strong. As scientists performed their research, it revealed how helpful probiotics were to major health systems within the body such as the digestive tract. To date, doctors have often suggested the use of probiotics to help with digestive problems. Since probiotics have been proven to function in a manner that helps maintain healthiness in living systems, doctors trust that probiotics will do the job!

What are the important functions that bacteria serve in living systems?

Bacteria performs a number of necessary functions in the intestinal tract. The tract consists of the stomach and intestines. Some forms of intestinal tract bacteria work with the intestinal organs like the stomach to help with processing food and gathering nutrients. The tract is divided into the upper and lower gastrointestinal tracts. There is a mucosal tissue which lines the inside of the intestines. Good bacteria is found within the mucosal lining and helps to strengthen the lining throughout the gastrointestinal tract. The bacteria makes it harder for toxins to take up residence in the gasrointetinal tract.

Can Probiotics Fight off Bad Bacteria ?

Yes, probiotics CAN fight off bad bacteria. Probiotics help keep bad bacteria from multiplying and causing illness in many ways. They also use up nutrients so that bad bacteria will not have access to the nutrients. The existence of probiotics proves that there is such thing as bacteria that is good for the body, instead of hurting the body. According to the Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide, one person normally has around 100 trillion bacteria cells in their stomach. Sounds bad, but again - now we know bacteria does not always have to have a bad outcome for a human. There is good and bad bacteria throughout our environment and within our internal system. Let's cheer for probiotics to win the battle against the bad bacteria!
